The Union of Concerned Scientists is the leading science-based nonprofit working for a healthy environment and a safer world. UCS combines independent scientific research and citizen action to develop innovative, practical solutions and to secure responsible changes in government policy, corporate practices, and consumer choices.

"Now's the time to confront this challenge once and for all. Delay is no longer an option. Denial is no longer an acceptable response. The stakes are too high, the consequences too serious. Stopping climate change won't be easy. It won't happen overnight, but I promise you this: When I am President, any Governor who's willing to promote clean energy will have a partner in the White House. Any company that's willing to invest in clean technology will have an ally in Washington, and any Nation that is willing to join the cause of combating climate change will have an ally in the United States of America."

The transition team has truly opened up their ears to any who have a voice in the issue. Numerous representatives from organizations who comprise the Energy Action Coalition (the people who brought you Power Vote and the upcoming Power Shift conference) were present on a strategy call yesterday.

The Power Vote campaign's main goal was to have our voices heard and to earn a seat at the table. Congratulations are due all around.

Remember how we kept saying the real work would begin AFTER November 4?? Well, we meant it. We are not content to merely vote or create amazing change on our campuses and in our communities. We are going to demand that our politicians step up to the challenge. We will not stop until this country has 100% clean energy, millions of green jobs, every coal/nuclear/dirty energy facility is shuttered, and we have the boldest climate policies ever both here and internationally.

We want to let you know about an exciting opportunity for college students, the Clinton Global Initiative University. This event challenges college students and universities to tackle global problems with practical, innovative solutions. It will be taking place from February 13-15th, 2009 at the University of Texas at Austin, but the final application deadline is December 12th, 2008.

The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) is a non-partisan catalyst for action that brings together a community of global leaders from various backgrounds to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

It’s Getting Hot in Here is the voice of a growing movement, a collection of voices from the student and youth leaders of the global movement to stop global warming. Originally created by youth leaders to allow youth to report from the International Climate Negotiations in Montreal, It’s Getting Hot in Here has since grown into a global online community, with over 100 writers from countries around the world.

Today’s Voice: The Trek to Re-Energize America

The Trek to Re-Energize America is a bike trip to Washington D.C. Riders will depart for D.C. from all across the country, leaving from their home states and sweeping up media attention and grassroots support as they go. Upon arrival in D.C. the riders will rally and lobby for action on current legislation by asking their representatives to be leaders in the fight against climate change. A massive number of organized passionate people who have biked across the United States for something they believe strongly in will make for a statement that politicians and media will be unable to ignore.
