It looks like the proposed Bluegrass Pipeline is planning on crossing the Kentucky State University Research Farm. The farm currently has a route mapped out through the property with flags where the pipeline might be built.

In a unexpected move, the Board of Governors voted on Thursday to reject Student Green Fund proposals from both Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Florida State University (FSU). The student led initiative would have implemented a new fee of $0.50 per credit hour for each student enrolled at the two institutions, and the money would have gone into a fund specifically for clean energy and sustainability projects on these campuses.

On Earth Day 2013, April 22nd at noon, students from USF Tampa’s Student Environmental Association gathered for a Divestment Workshop Teach-In. Kevin Blossfeld of the St. Petersburg USF campus and a journalist of the campus paper, The Oracle, joined the meeting as well. While invitations had been sent to many administrators and offices of the Tampa campus to join them in the president’s conference room in the Patel Center for Global Solutions, none attended this meeting.

As the end of the semester nears and many of us gear up for finals, graduation, tying up loose ends, and making plans for the coming chapters in our lives, it is time once again to remind ourselves and those we love:  self-care matters.

Floridians, We must demand more!

Amidst the celebration that the election is finally over (was that the longest campaign ever, or was it just me?) and that the candidate that I hoped would win, won I’m left with a sort of bitter sweetness. Sure there are lots of things to celebrate with four states passing marriage equality laws, record breaking youth-voter turnout, and the popular vote and electoral vote both standing on the side of good, but what about those things that didn’t go so well.

Being a Floridian through and through is usually something I like to brag about. I mean nearly every day of the year here is 80+ degrees and we have warm ocean waters surrounding us on three sides… But then an election comes around and I am thrown into shame. Why is it that we can’t seem to get our shit together? We’ve only been a state (ie. holding elections here), oh for the last hundred and sixty-seven years.

Haunted Food Forest Festival – Get Out The EARLY Vote

What a weekend! Shuttles to the polls, long lines, dunk tanks, sweet potato fries, environmental justice, and corporate zombies only begins to describe it.

This past weekend at Florida Gulf Coast University we held our Trick-Or-Vote Haunted Food Forest Festival, a collaboration between the Power Vote Campaign, Students for Environmental Justice, the Dominican Republic Outreach Program, and the Food Foresters to engage our community and to get folks out to the polls.

Each morning started off with shuttles to the closest early voting locations from the freshman dorms (and a TWO HOUR wait at the poll, totally worth it!) then in the afternoon we had a family friendly fall festival, complete with freshly fried sweet potatoes and sugar cane directly from the food forest and pin the blade on the wind turbine. But it wasn’t until the sun went down that the real fun started.

Florida Climate Groups Show Evidence of Sea Level Rise, ask Candidates to Lead on Climate Change

As I stood ankle-deep in sea water on the corner of 10th and Alton Street, one of the busiest intersections in Miami Beach, I wondered what else it was going to take to get our candidates to recognize the urgency of climate change. When we say its the most important issue of our generation, we’re not kidding. Because of sea-level rise, Florida is already experiencing the effects on climate change in our coastal cities. Check out the new study done by the Union of Concerned Scientists with all the details here.

Together with Climate ParentsUnion of Concerned Scientiststhe CLEO Institute, and Urban Paradise Guild, we came together on Thursday to call on President Obama and Governor Romney to be leaders on climate change. We can no longer deny its existence or ignore it for the sake of political gain. We must take action now. Take a look at the video above, and spread the word.

300 Youth Activists Break the Silence on Climate Change at SSREC

Wow, what an incredible weekend.

Over 300 young people converged at Florida A&M University for the Southeast Student Renewable Energy Conference (SSREC) this weekend, coming together to learn the skills they need to fight big polluters and take action on climate change in their campuses and communities. Young clean energy activists from all over the southeast converged to learn from each other through a series of workshops, speakers, and trainings, and to share with their communities all over the region.

But it didn’t stop there.

We knew this year was a special year right away. Not only was SSREC being hosted in Tallahassee, Florida – the Capitol of a very important swing state – but this year’s SSREC had a renewed energy and spirit that you could feel in the air. With the help of the incredible FAMU Green Coalition, climate activists at SSREC organized an amazing march and rally to call on the candidates to break the silence on climate change and promote true clean energy solutions.

On Thursday, the Student Environmental Association (SEA) at the University of South Florida in Tampa joined campuses across the country in a National Day of Action to “Get Dirty Energy Money Out Of Politics.” The students stood – clipboards in hand, cellphones ready, and with plenty of pens – outside the USF Tampa campus’ Student Center urging their peers to make a pledge to the environment with Power Vote.
